I-M-O-G-E-N celebrates a 30th birthday with a piece that is lyrical, gentle, and uplifting. It is a special 30th birthday gift commissioned by a mother, Lim Hur, for her daughter, Imogen.

Imogen, who is a skilled cellist, grew up studying music with renowned Australian cellist David Pereira, and singing with choral ensembles Vox Anima and The Resonants. She has enjoyed performing in concerts at Carnegie Hall NY and Southwark Cathedral London.

Australian composer Sally Greenaway mapped the letters of Imogen’s name to the notes of the A major scale to create a theme motif, which is woven throughout the piece. Imogen’s middle name, ‘Bo’ (precious), inspires the atmosphere and an intricate delicateness for the piece.

Look to This Day weaves between the two worlds of jazz and classical music. It features a richly coloured harmonic palette typical of jazz artists like Kurt Elling, whilst paying homage to the traditions of French mélodie (art songs) such as those by Reynaldo Hahn. During the composition process, Greenaway was particularly interested in exploring the intertwining of the vocal line and the piano accompaniment. This results in both parts sharing the spotlight throughout the piece. The vocal part is challenging but in many ways quite cantabile. The intricate piano accompaniment shimmers with restrained grandeur.

Summer Beckons captures the beauty of the leafy growth in a walled garden, in response to a stanza from Martina Hoffman's poem 'My Love is a House'. Colleague Thea Zimple commissioned fellow Australian composers, including Sally Greenaway, to create a song cycle for Hoffman's poem. The pieces were then premiered as a set, with poetry and music interwoven with narrator and chamber music ensembles.

Greenaway's music slowly expands, with a vivid wonderment as musical vine tendrils twirl, seeking their next grip hold as they face their leaves towards the warmth of the sun: the beauty and bounty of Summer growth!

The Strawberry Thief (suite) for flute, cello and piano, brings delight from Australian composer Sally Greenaway. The suite comprises three musical snapshots, inviting us into a world of birds, gardens and cheeky foxes:

1. The Strawberry Thief illustrate a fleeting encounter of an inquisitive bird as it searches for its breakfast! Flitting between the flower beds, taking a dip in the birdbath, the little thief eventually escapes with a strawberry...

2. The Secret Garden drapes soft misty rain over a secluded garden, evoking smells of wet grass and bark, droplets gently dripping from the leaves of rose bushes, and spiderwebs glistening.

3. The Little Red Fox captures the whimsical curiosity of an inquisitive fox. There is a playful dialogue between the musicians illustrating a cheeky fox frolicking in a nearby field.

Commissioned as a musical gift celebrating a ‘Ruby’ (40 years) Wedding Anniversary. Stephanie and Ross Burton, who commissioned the suite, gifted composer Sally Greenaway an ‘inspiration book’ featuring their shared ‘favourite things’, including photos of English and Australian Gardens, handmade crafts (ceramics and quilting), tapestry patterns by Victorian-era English designer William Morris, and charming illustrations of a young fox family.
